Despite being crowned Serie A champions for the first time in 11 years last season, Inter Milan have had a summer of change.
To start with, they’ve lost their star manager, Antonio Conte, who disappointingly departed following their amazing title triumph due to the club’s finances meaning they’d struggle to strengthen the squad to the Italian’s liking.
Losing Achraf Hakimi for €60 million to Paris Saint-Germain was another huge blow to their title aspirations, for the marauding wingback was a vital driving force behind so many attacks.
With rumours that many teams are interested in other key players such as Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella, Inter will surely have to keep hold of their guns to have any chance of challenging again for the title.
Appointing Simone Inzaghi as manager does, however, offer some continuity, for he shares many similarities tactically to Conte, which should ensure the players’ adaptation to his plans should be quite smooth. A regular deployer of the 3-5-2/5-3-2 shape just like his predecessor, the former Lazio boss can importantly keep the fundamentals familiar for his players.

Having only bought in Hakan Calhanoglu (free transfer) and Matteo Darmian permanently (€2.50 million) to bolster the first team squad so far, it’ll be interesting to see if they can bring in some further quality. Positively, the likes of Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin, Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez, Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic and Barcelona’s Miralem Pjanic have been linked, which would certainly add some extra class.
Ranked second favourites to win Serie A by the bookies at $3.00 just behind Juventus at $2.25, they unquestionably still have a good chance of retaining their title. With Atalanta ($6), Napoli ($15), AC Milan ($17), AS Roma ($19) and Lazio ($29) to also contend with triumphing once more won’t be an easy task, however.
Starting their preseason with some encouraging results, including a 6-0 win over Crotone, Inzaghi spoke of how delighted he is with his troops following this victory. “I’m happy today because the lads were excellent but they’ve been impeccable in training for three weeks now. I’m very pleased with the work we’ve done so far,” he told Inter’s official website.
With all eyes on Inzaghi to see if he can replicate Conte’s feats, their quest for glory under their new manager starts on August 21 against Genoa at home.
